Stanford Singing Break at Queens' College Cambridge, 12-14 July

  • 12-14 July 2024

Come and sing choral music by Charles Villiers Stanford in the magnificent setting of Queens’ College, Cambridge, in an exclusive weekend course hosted by the Royal School of Music to mark the centenary of the composer’s death.

There will be services of Evensong and Holy Communion, including the opportunity to sing Stanford’s glorious Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis in A, conducted by Hugh Morris, Director of the RSCM.

Stanford was organ scholar at Queens’ College, whose chapel will be the base for this course. Later, he was organist of Trinity College, and participants will sing in the beautifiul chapel there as part of the weekend’s events.

    In addition:

    • A chance to view Stanford manuscripts in an exclusive session for members of the course
    • An informative lecture on the life and works of the composer, given by Stanford expert Jeremy Dibble
    • A special, illustrated organ recital given by Anthony Gritten, featuring Stanford organ works
    • Meals to share social time together, as well as time to explore the delights of Cambridge in summer.

    Who is the course for?

    • Ideal for experienced, adult choral singers with a reasonable level of music reading and independence as a singer, working at or above RSCM Silver Award level or equivalent (places may be limited in some voice parts to ensure a balanced choir).
    • Singers will be asked for a brief summary of their choral experience when booking.
    • Interactive learning resources will be available through the RSCM Choral Coach app.
    • A full set of music in a commemorative presentation folder will be available to all participants.
    • The course is open to over 18’s only.
