Director of Choral Activities Stephen Gothold, himself an alumnus, organized the recruiting efforts and the Chorale made its debut performance on Saturday, December 4, 1982 at the Whittier Presbyterian Church - a complete performance of Handel’s Messiah. Since then, the Chorale has sung over one hundred thirty concert programs in the Southern California area. The Chorale performed in Japan in 1994 and at the Hollywood Bowl in 1995 as it joined together with 1,000 singers from America and Japan to sing Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. In 2001, members of the Chorale -- along with Whittier College students, alumni, and members of the Imperial Valley Choral Society -- toured Eastern Europe and performed selections of American hymns, spirituals, and sacred songs. For years, the ensemble has used an arrangement of Irish Blessing to welcome new members and bid farewell to graduating seniors. After nearly two decades of performing the same version, my former High School director, Matt Wanner, reached out to me in 2026 with the opportunity to create a new arrangement of this cherished tradition. In writing this setting, I sought to create something both accessible and meaningful, while providing opportunities to feature students, whether graduating seniors or gifted soloists, in a special way. The choral programme starts with a general education for ages 5-7, before they are ready for Junior Choir (7-10), Intermediate Choir (10-13), Stage Choir or Youth Choir (13-18). Youth Choir contains over 80 singers, and the total number of singers meeting each week at the academy is over 180. Like other groups, our group also had its flop. Some of us are already busy studying in college after we graduated High School. That's why we need to find new members. We suffered from having LAck of commitment of other members, and it gave us a difficult time to find new members. But our Maestro never gave up. He continued to build the group. We have a lot of pLAns to build again and let this group shine again with its brightest light.
