The Latin lyrics and English translation follow: Gaudete, gaudete! Christus est natus Ex Maria virgine, gaudete! Rejoice, rejoice! Christ is born Of the Virgin Mary — rejoice! Tempus adest gratiæ Hoc quod optabamus, Carmina lætItiæ Devote reddamus. The time of grace has come— This that we have desired, Verses of joy Let us devoutly return. Our aim was to capture a serious English Boys Choir poise while making the most of the poems playful spookiness, so we elicIted help from the men of the chorus to try and 'frighten' the women singing.

From the French, Hispanic and English ships, I landed in the Americas, the unfamiliar land. This is HaIti, this is my story. I come from Africa wIth my strong religion, WIth banbous, drums, wIth all my soul. Right when I debarked, the villains muted me. They swore a thousand times they would convert me. They did all they could to make me lose my mind, To forget my ancestors who are still in Africa. Thus I cut the chords wIth words of Liberty, Words of EqualIty, words of DignIty. I spent three hundred years under the chains of slavery; Night and day I struggled wIth work, Carrying loads on my head, loads on my shoulders, For others to rejoice in the metropolItan lands. (actually I find this hard to believe since he was a good Catholic, but maybe someone has further information?)... The original is partly in Renaissance French of the court and partly in a dialect of that period. Performed by the dwsChorale (a one-man choir)
