About Me
Donald M. Skirvin, recipient of The American Prize in Composition (2020, Choral Division), is widely recognized for his evocative and poetically driven choral works. He studied music at the Jordan Conservatory of Music in Indianapolis and at Indiana University, Bloomington, and is a member of ASCAP. His compositions have been performed and recorded by choruses throughout the United States and internationally.
Skirvin’s career encompasses roles as conductor, teacher, rehearsal pianist, composer, and ensemble singer—experiences that have shaped his deep affinity for the human voice. While his catalog includes instrumental works, his artistic focus remains rooted in choral music, where his sensitivity to text and vocal color is most fully realized.
His contributions to the field have been supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and by numerous commissions from both regional and national ensembles. Writing for Classics Today, critic David Vernier described Skirvin’s music as “rich in imagery wrought by imaginative use of harmony and apt, sensitive text-setting. And it’s also just plain gorgeous music that speaks well for this composer’s facility with voices.”
