set to music for six part mixed voices SAT-SAT)
The title of this work (Canticula Ursae Minoris/Songs of the Little Bear) comes from the origin of the melodies:
Many years ago I wrote an "Oratorio" based on Winnie the Pooh (The Expotition to the North Pole)
and gave each character little melodic leitmotifs,
such as "Sing ho for the life of a bear" (which becomes "to be a light to lighten the Gentiles" in the Nunc Dimittis),
"They all went off to discover the pole" (which is the initial theme of the Magnificat)
and "What I say, said Eeyore, is that it's unsettling" (which becomes the "Glory be to the Father" section at the end of each canticle)
The original and much simpler "oratorio" work, called Poohratorio of course, may be published once AA Milne goes into public domain (2031).

"1. Here is December, everything is white in the country.
The flakes fly, the tops are snowy.
It's the spirit of Christmas that fills our homes,
and invites oneself into our hearts to fill us with happiness.
2. Christmas is coming, it's time to celebrate
the Child-God Savior who was announced to us.
It's the spirit of Christmas that fills our homes,
and invites oneself into our hearts to fill us with happiness.
and invites oneself into our hearts to fill us with happiness.
It's the Christmas spirit!" less

Cujus latus perforatum unda fluxit sanguine

O dulcis. O Pie. O Jesu Fili Mariae, Miserere mei.

Hail, true Body, born of the Virgin Mary,
who truly suffered, sacrificed on the cross for humankind,
from whose pierced side water and blood flowed
Be for us a foretaste in the trial of death
O sweet one, O holy one, O Jesus son of Mary, have mercy on me.
Amen.

Individual song parts recorded by the choristers using their own equipment following lead videos made by our Director, Pierre. Pierre then put together the video using Final Cut Pro.
A message from the Director:
"Christmas 2020 is the first in our 43-year history where we haven’t been able to stage live concerts, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still sing. So, after planning, rehearsing and recording, we are proud to present Ô nuit - one selection from our Virtual Christmas Concert of 6 carols. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nstkQZ9-5Gs
We hope you will enjoy our renditions of old favourites, some in new settings by our director, along with a few lesser known pieces from our carol archives.
I cannot be more proud of my musical colleagues for forging through the complex logistics of putting these videos together. I thank them for their loyalty to our fans and their fellow choir members, and for their diligence in pr... less

This work reflects some of the history of Manchester as seen through the eyes of local poet Audrey Vaughan, including its origins around the river Irwell, the original monastery which became Manchester Cathedral, the industrial revolution, the Peterloo Massacre, and the singing of church and cathedral choirs up to the present day.
Music composed by David Warin Solomons
Conductor: Zoltán Pad
Tenor soloist: József Gál
Treble soloist: Csongor Gyulai
Organist: Zsolt Mészáros
Pianist: Dániel Dinyés
The boys' choir's conductor was Márton Tóth who taught the piece to the children.
