The hand that signed the paper
The hand that signed the paper felled a city;
簽署文件的手，摧毀了一座城市；
Five sovereign fingers taxed the breath,
強權在握的五隻手指，令人窒息，
Doubled the globe of dead and halved a country;
倍增了死亡的境界，半分了一個國家；
These five kings did a king to death.
五位強權者聯手扼殺了一個國王。
The mighty hand leads to a sloping shoulder,
這神聖的手搭著垂落的肩膀，
The finger joints are cramped with chalk;
指關節如石膏般僵硬；
A goose’s quill has put an end to murder
一支鵝絨筆成就了屠殺，
That put an end to talk.
因而終結了對話。
The hand that signed the treaty bred a fever,
簽署條約的手，帶來了瘟疫，
And famine grew, and locusts came;
也帶來了饑荒和蝗禍；
Great is the hand that holds dominion over
多了不起的手啊，
Man by a scribbled name.
藉由潦草的簽名，統治著人類。
The five kings count the dead but do not soften
五位國王數算著死去的靈魂
The crusted wound nor stroke the brow;
既不安慰結痂的傷口，也不輕撫受傷的額頭；
A hand rules pity as a hand rules heaven;
這隻手掌管了天地，也主宰著憐憫；
Hands have no tears to flow.
手是不流淚的。
早些時候筆者知道Dylan Thomas（1914-1953）這位詩人，是因為搖滾巨星Bob Dylan：他因為少年時崇拜Dylan Thomas而將他的藝名取為大家熟知的Bob Dylan。以前拜讀Dylan Thomas的作品，字句中充滿了豪邁不羈的色彩，從生命到慾望，甚至到死亡，充滿著大膽的筆觸，更帶著取多對於社會的思考和批判。當時讀來特別費解，很難單就字面上的意思去推敲詩人詩中的內涵。過了一段時間，唱到史特拉汶斯基（I. Stravinsky）所寫的”In Memoriam Dylan Thomas”才開始從音樂中回來認識這位詩人，重新翻閱他的作品，也另外聽了Bob Dylan的音樂，才漸漸瞭解箇中精彩之處。
“The Hand That Signed The Paper”寫於1933年，當時20歲的Dylan Thomas發表了他少數帶有政治色彩的詩作。這首詩的格式工整但不匠氣，用字簡單但又非常深刻，不過人們卻不會常拿來討論其文學美感，而是其內容。詩中內容並無強調任何政治傾向，或者影射任何政治制度、人物等，也超脫出時代的框架——因為任何時空背景下，都會因為當權者的一手控制，造成社會的不幸。詩人真正的目的在於喚醒人民的思考：為什麼掌權者要簽署這份文件？詩中的城市為什麼會遭逢如此的狀況？當權者知道有多少犧牲者，在乎與否？種種的問題並非追求著統一正確的答案，而是深切地提醒著：做為人民應該擁有的思維與批判。
筆者之所以選擇以這首詩入樂，是嘗試將合唱曲以不同的角度切入，以及重新思考詩的音樂性。曲... less
