The School Choir itself has, over the years, gone from strength to strength despite the need ...  moreThe idea for our Vocal Group goes back to the Musical notions and ideas that we learned over the years as part of the Choir of the Liceo “A. Mariotti”, Perugia. The School Choir itself has, over the years, gone from strength to strength despite the need for constant renewal caused by the inevitable “turnover” as new students took the places of those who left. However, after this experience, which has included many concerts in the region, participations in Choir Festivals in Italy and artistic exchanges with youth Choirs from Germany, Hungary, Spain, Denmark and the Czech Republic, our desire to continue singing and, of course, the joy which singing together gave us all made it obvious that the time had clearly come to establish a group which could allow us to continue our Musical journey together. In its 30 year history, the Choir has sung in the most prestigious venues, not only in the UK but also all over Europe, forming strong bonds of friendship with several Choirs from overseas. The Choir continues to grow in strength and has won awards for contributions to choral Music and Cornish culture.

When Santiago and I began to discuss this commission, we kept returning to the subject of mental health and inclusion. In a discussion with students, one student voiced that they “feel excluded and not cared for,” and that their struggle with mental health “has made [them] feel alone and helpless.” Santiago begins the piece with an old, quasi-ritualistic melody that calls back to previous times and traditions. As the work continues, the melody unites together with the other voices to emulate inclusion and unity of voices. His text draws parallels to nature and how we are able to bloom through the darkness of adversity with the help of others.
