“See, darkness covers The earth” is built on a previous piece for bass clarinet (or cello) and computer called "One of The seven angels". The title is a quote from book of revelations, and "See darkness..." is in its turn a series of oTher quotes that The first title refer to in various ways. It turns out that The references to me felt very contemporary and had to do with The current trends in society and that meant that I could both recompose something old, use new old texts that referred to an old piece of mine and construct a very contemporary and important piece that may both say something about our time and give hope for a better future.
The original piece was composed to Mattias Eklund

Water Ruminations - V. Flutes for Dancing
FLUTES FOR DANCING

It's lucky to hear The flutes for dancing
coming down The road. The ground is glowing.
The table set in The yard.
We will drink all this wine tonight
because it's Spring. It is.
It's a growing sea. We're clouds
over The sea,
or flecks of matter
in The ocean when The ocean seems lit from within.
I know I'm drunk when I start this ocean talk.
Would you like to see The moon split
in half with one throw?

Performed by The Millennium Consort, Martin Neary, conductor, and The Pomona College Choir, Donna Di Grazia, director.
Water Ruminations is a setting of six poems by The thirteenth-century poet Rumi, in English translations from The Persian by Coleman Barks, for double choir and organ. And I saw a new heaven and a new earth:
for The first heaven and The first earth were passed away;
and There was no more sea.
And I John saw The holy city, new Jerusalem,
coming down from God out of heaven,
prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
And I heard a great voice out of Heaven, saying,
Behold, The tabernacle of God is with men,
and he will dwell with Them, and They shall be his people,
and God himself shall be with Them, and be Their God.
And God shall wipe away all tears from Their eyes;
and There shall be no more death, neiTher sorrow, nor crying,
neiTher shall There be any more pain:
for The former things are passed away.
(Revelation 21)
Sung at Canterbury CaThedral during our Royal School of Church Music Summer Course in 1986, under Martin How.
I (David W Solomons) was one of The altos.
John Huntley - a fellow alto - recorded this performance.
