He found his identity as a national composer with his synthesis of folk music, classical training and the experience gained as Musical Editor of the English Hymnal. Composed over the span of four decades culminating in 1949, Folksongs of the Four Seasons is a cantata of 16 songs commissioned by The Women’s Institute; four for each season. As the introduction states, Eric Whitacre's famous "Sleep" was originally composed to Robert Frost's "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening", but when Whitacre realized the Frost estate was not releasing permission for musical settings of the poem, Charles Silvestri wrote the poem "Sleep" around the music Whitacre had written. To honor the inspiration the poem gave Mr. Whitacre, and to further honor all poets who inspire choral composers, we presented this beloved piece with the original Frost lyrics.  less
