The composition of members is unique in the international classical music world: all members are from one large family: six siblings between 8 and 21 years of ageand the two parents. Artistic leader: the parents, Zita and Vilmos Tóth, but the children also participate in creating musical conceptions and decisions. The parents have been singing in choirs since they were children and have participated in numerous competitions, festivals and courses. The children have also sung in choirs from an early age, usually singing solos. They study singing, musical theory and instrumental music. Our purpose is to promote the miracle of singing and music - that we owe so much - to people. With each passing year we strive to sing more and more beautiful compositions with a higher quality of performance. This smallest and most Select of the Hofstra choirs comprises the best Singers at the University, both within and outside the Department of Music, and focuses on the distinct art of unaccompanied, or a cappella, Ensemble singing, presented in carefully chosen performance spaces that are uniquely attuned to celebrate the human voice's potential. From an educational standpoint, the Ensemble serves two main functions for the University. First, it acts as a laboratory for Hofstra’s future music educators, both undergraduate and graduate, providing outlets for the exploration of the art of Ensemble preparation through the study of the highest-quality choral literature. We accomplish our mission by combining the power of Women's experience with musical expression in the following ways: 1) each season we commission one new piece for Women's voices from a female composer; 2) each season, we research, uncover and perform a work for Women's voices by a female composer who has been overlooked in music history; 3) we provide an annual scholarship to one girl to sing with the Phoenix Girl's Chorus and 4) each season, we perform two annual concerts and a variety of local performances in our communities and schools.  less

The choir is known for its adventurous programming, seeking out music written specifically for women and frequently commissioning new works. Its appearances include performances at the distinguished National Convention of the American Choral Directors Association (February 2003 and March 1997), including memorable New York performances at Carnegie Hall, Riverside Church, and Avery Fisher Hall. Elektra was honoured to represent Canada at the Fourth World Symposium on Choral Music in Sydney, Australia (August 1996). All participants are vocally trained, some of which at music academies. The Ensemble prepares concerts twice a year, singing highly diverse repertoire, ranging from renaissance compositions to contemporary music and everything in between. TIEN cooperates with several conductors, each specialized in the repertoire and theme chosen for a programme, e.g. Fokko Oldenhuis, JanJoost van Elburg, Felix van den Hombergh, Sanne Nieuwenhuijsen and Nicky Bouwers.  less
