Moses Hogan (1957-2003) Spiritual Moses Hogan was an internationally renowned pianist, composer and arranger of choral music best known for his arrangements of spirituals. He studied with a full scholarship at Oberlin Conservatory of Music before continuing with his graduate studies at Julliard School of Music. He won several piano competitions during his performance years and published many CD's as well as songbooks. 'Hold On!' is an example of his 'soloist vs choir' style of spiritual arrangements. There is a solo throughout that sings the primary lyrics and message of the song while the rest of the choir provides a lively and energetic - often rhythmic - accompaniment. He came to Brazil in 1956 and spent half of his life in Salvador. He was a member of the Brazilian Academy of Music. He was master of three generations of conductors and composers in Brazil. PSALM 150 is a contemporary piece with rhythmic, harmonic and contrapuntal challenges. With its sounds of bells, trumpets, strings, flutes and timpani, describes the psalm and ends with a Hallelujah in the form of liturgical dance that grows up to the grand finale.  less

His compositions have been performed worldwide and been very well received. He is well known for his horn playing and has premiered over 200 works written for him. He worked as a Fulbright Senior Lecturer in Music at Kenyatta University in Nairobi, Kenya in 1993-1994 during which time he was greatly influenced by Kenyan music and as a result composed his Missa Kenya in 1995 for SATB chorus, piano and obbligato horn. The Gloria does not require horn or piano but makes use of upbeat syncopated rhythms in the voice parts and percussion which drives a compound rhythm throughout.
