It is available through my website at http://cschurch.net/en/compositions/choir/o-magnum-mysterium/ and will be published by Carus-Verlag in July 2016. Program Note: It is difficult to follow with (yet) another setting of this famous text that has inspired so many composers over the centuries. In my attempt, “O magnum mysterium” returns three times after the first statement, in a similar gesture but each time shifted to a new tonality with even more flats. Thus, the listener gets ever more pulled into this magnificient text until the piece culminates in a jubilant “Alleluia” in C-major, having come full-circle back to very first harmony we heard. Nevenka's repertoire includes songs from Bulgaria, Macedonia, Croatia, Albania, Russia, Greece, and Georgia, as well as Ladino Sephardic and Rom (Gypsy) songs. The group was formed in 1976 by women who shared a common interest in the complex harmonies and compelling rhythms typical in Balkan music. Very much in the Eastern European tradition, Nevenka includes women of all ages making music together.

This is footage from their concert at St Stephani, Bremen in December, 2010. The text of this piece is really cool. It is about a mystical tribe of desert women who would stamp their feet into the dust creating beautiful clouds. Light would shine through and create patterns and rainbows. Men would be attracted by these clouds and come to the women's camp. The Wirindji women would cook for them, mate with them then kill them and eat them!
