The Chorale is the premier, choral ensemble of the University. Students who have been...  moreThe Chorale is the premier, choral ensemble of the University. The ensemble consists of approximately 24-32 vocalists selected through a voice placement process and performs traditional/advanced choral literature from all periods. Students who have been active in choral ensembles in High school or college are encouraged to audition for this choir. Auditions for Chorale can take place at anytime to fill necessary spots in the group. Once students are selected for Chorale, they are members until they choose to leave, are removed, or when they graduate. In addition to its regular concert schedule, the Chorale tours each spring (Orlando, ’09; NYC, ’10; Atlanta, ’11, Boston, ’12, Orlando, ’13). A yearly scholarship is offered to people who are successfully placed in the group.  less

As well as attending weekly rehearsals, the members of this ensemble are committed to music studies and/or voice training. They also participate in a variety of wonderful performance opportunities, recordings and a touring program. Brisbane Birralee Voices is acknowledged on home shores and abroad as one of Australia's finest children's choirs. The program encourages young singers to develop their vocal technique and attain musical excellence and there is a strong focus on nurturing the individual in a broader sense. In addition to the excitement of achieving High artistic goals and the personal enrichment experienced by each member, there is an emphasis placed on the benefits of sharing their gift of music with others and the intrinsic value of music within society. In Oct of 2008 I returned to the Jes church, the place I had grown up with my father running the folk mass choir. He had retired 12 years previously. What was once a packed out mass full of joy and prayer, families and young couples, singles and religious, was now a quieter mass with no choir and I saddened by this. I offered my services as a singer and musician to come and provide music for the 5:30 mass and within a few short weeks I returned to the place I consider my spiritual home. I had not purposely set out to start a choir but people began to approach me with a desire to sing and it was a need within the community I was not going to Ignore. On the 12th Dec 2008 The Jes Gospel Choir was birthed with 5 singers and me & it was a wonderful experience and we received a very warm welcome. This prompted the birth of the first College Choir. The...  moreThe history of the Benedictine Choir dates back to the early 1900. It was Mr. Bonnie Fonseka, a distinguished Old Boy, who's vision soon came to be a Benedictine tradition, by forming a musical club. This prompted the birth of the first College Choir. The Choir acquired a reputation for top class singing and in addition often invited to perform at important national events such as to perform with other schools when princess Elizabeth visited Ceylon in 1952. Since Mr. Bonnie Fonseka’s retirement there were many dedicated young musicians who undertook the responsibility and uphill task of training the Choir. Some of them were Mr. Robert Joseph, Mr. Francis De Almeida, Mr. Nicholas Johnpulle, Rev Bro. Augustine and Mr. Ravein George. Mr. Ravein George revived the Choir in 1996 and guided them to reach the height of success as being cited as a Classical Choir. The Choir won the all island singing competition in the year 1999.
