ONE';">moreONE;">On 21 March at 7.30pm Kingston Choral Society presents a stirring performance of music by four iconic nineteenth century German composers in the magnificent setting of All Saints Church, Kingston. The programme of inspirational compositions by Beethoven, Brahms, Mendelssohn and Schumann is a perfect prelude to spring and encompasses the Romantic themes of dream, destiny, heroism, and pantheism. Brahms’ Schicksalslied (Song of Destiny) contrasts heavenly bliss with the sorrows of the human condition, while Schumann’s Nachtlied evokes the serene world of sleep. Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture portrays the fall of a once all-conquering hero and Mendelssohn’s Die Erste Walpurgisnacht is a dramatic musical rendition of the clash between nature-worshipping Druidic tradition and new belief in a God disembodied from the natural world. The concert will be conducted by Andrew Griffiths, with KCS’s partner orchestra the Thames Camerata, and distinguished soloists, Alexandria Moon, Emyr Lloyd JONEs and Ambrose Connolly. K... The words are set to the melody of the Scottish Minstrel "Common' Frae The Toun". (This is a variant of the tune to which Auld Lang Syne is usually sung—the melodic shape is almost identical, the difference lying in the tempo and rhythm.) It is performed here by the dwsChorale, with a cheeky insertion of a hornpipe! Gin a body meet a body Comin' thro' the rye Gin a body kiss a body Need a body cry? The text for the piece was written by Bartholomew Begley, a Dublin-based philosophy lecturer who works on philosophical translations of early modern Latin texts. The text 'Deus Ex Machina' tells the story of a suddenly and unexpectedly found God 'out of a machine.' The setting of the Choir was very experimental – the aim was to take full advantage of the possibilities offered by the spatial, immersive sound. The Choir sections were spread horizontally and vertically; therefore, the entire space around the listener was arranged. The visuals indicate the positions of the Choir by points of light, whose brightness and movement were devised based on the sound energy of each of the choral sections. ONE';">less
