Originally dedicated to performing 17th and 18th century operas, the membership voted to rename the group Richmond Opera in 2016 to reflect a diversification into performing operas of other eras. Our next opera will be a fully staged performance of JF Lampe's burlesque 'The Dragon of Wantley', a hilarious pastiche of Handel's operas, sung in English with baroque orchestra, at the lovely Victorian Normansfield Theatre. It was such a riot back in the day that it eclipsed Handel's more serious works! As the resident choral ensemble of the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts, we perform a varied repertoire from classics to Broadway and rock to jazz in two main concerts, one during the Christmas season and one in the spring, with additional benefit and collaborative performances throughout the year.
