In addition to a subscription concert series in Edmonton, the choir performs regional concerts in surrounding Alberta centres, and runs a touring program of choral education for primary and secondary schools. Pro Coro has performed at the Toronto International Choral Festival (1994 and 2002), the 1988 Olympic Arts Festival, and Canadian Voices (2003 landmark series of concerts celebrating 50 years of professional choral singing in Canada and R. Murray Schafer’s 70th year). The choir has commissioned dozens of new works, the majority by Canadian composers. The twenty-four voices of Pro Coro Canada have been shaped by some of the finest choral conductors in the world, including Gervais, Anders Eby (Sweden), Søren Hansen (Denmark), Agnes Grossmann (Austria), and Richard Sparks (USA). Together with the Jazz-saxophonist Stefan Kuchel and the Sirius Quartet, the young men's choir performs contemporary works. The Quartet members describe themselves as artists of improvisation who break out of the conventional vocabulary of sound for a string quartet. Most pieces on this CD were written especially for the Sonux Ensemble, and thus composed to the singers' strengths. "We have worked on these pieces together with the composers, and given them their first performances over the course of the last five years. This disc features only world premiere recordings and, literally, unheard of choral music, " the choir's director Hans-Joachim Lustig notes. The works recorded on this CD focus on the topics of light and love. The eponymous poem by Charles Anthony Silvestri that lends its title to the disc frames and connects the two topics. They have been featured ...  moreThe 1607 Ensemble is a closely-knit vocal quartet that was selected as young artists at the Brighton Early Music Festival in 2007, and has gone on to perform in festivals throughout the UK and internationally in Utrecht and Capri. They have been featured on BBC Radio 3’s ‘In Tune’ and ‘The Early Music Show.’ The members of the 1607 Ensemble hail from Britain, Canada, and the US, and their diverse musical backgrounds and affinity for a variety of musical styles are evident in their music. Equally at home singing Renaissance music and Jazz, they also write their own compositions and arrangements, often combining old and new styles in music tailored to their unique vocal colours. One of the Ensemble’s long-time interests has been the poetry of Clément Marot in 16th-century chanson.
