Within this organisation, there are two sister groups: NOVA, the core group of singers performing to accompaniment and The Grace Notes who sing a cappella. Rehearsals are held weekly and fundraising concerts for local charities are run each year in May and December.

"Almas de Barro" Music and lyrics by Santiago Veros. Foreward: Santiago Veros wrote Almas de Barro at the age of 19, dedicating it to a young woman who at the time was shy and with whom he rarely talked. This piece intimately describes the moments during music theory classes when the two would look at each other continuously, youthfully, and silently, as if unable to do anything else. The piece, written as a counterpoint assignment, was intended to be performed during music theory class as a declaration of love. The idea was to make a musical representation of those moments. In August 2009, Mikko Sidoroff started his work as the c...  more The Student Union Choir of the University of Turku (TYY Choir for short, established in 1987) is a mixed Choir of approximately 60 singers from all the faculties and even outside the University. In August 2009, Mikko Sidoroff started his work as the Choir’s conductor. The Choir’s repertoire mainly consists of a wide variety of a cappella songs. The Choir can be found performing in Turku as well as other cities many times throughout the year. Traditionally, there is a quartet concert in January, a spring concert right after May Day (Vappu) and an advent concert in December. The TYY Choir has participated in many venues outside of Turku. The Choir represented Finland in the international Choir competition in Coleraine, Ireland in 2006. The competition could not have gone any better as the Choir won in the category of mixed Choir and was given the award as best Choir. The University Singers have performed throughout the world, and have sung with a variety of professional orchestras including the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, the Pacific Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra under the batons of conductors such as Carl St.Clair, John Mauceri, John Williams, and Keith Lockhart. Internationally acclaimed for their exquisite musicianship, they have been invited to perform at conferences organized by the American Choral Directors Association and the Music Educators National Conference.
