Antioch sings Paul Mealor's Ubi Caritas at the 2011 Piccolo Spoleto Festival. This piece was commissioned and performed at the Royal Wedding. We believe this to be the American premiere of the piece.

I was on the 1 train on Manhattan’s West Side one day when I saw the poem “Heaven,” by Patrick Phillips. I was immediately captured by the simple beauty of Patrick’s poem, and the mystery of the first line, “It will be the past.” I loved his vision and thought immediately that I wanted to compose music for this poem. Mystery, joy, wonder. “Heaven” is the winner of choral composition competitions sponsored by both the Manhattan Choral Ensemble and Georgia College. The women shed their shawls and toss them into the center to represent the ingredients being dropped into the bubbling 'cauldron'.

The first movement depicts the remarkable story of the captured Africans who were reduced to slaves by European settlers in the American continent, particularly in the Caribbean. The second movement recounts the indepence of Haiti; and the third movement is about the Perseverance of the country which to this day, Haiti is fighting with fury to keep its freedom. “No human being must live on their knees; slavery in all its forms is an affront to the Divine Creator. The sense of wonder teaches us to discover all the beauty and the magnificence of the creation, and the extraordinary richness of our humanity.
