Together these w...  moreIn English- Chamber Choir Cantinovum (established in 1989) is the youthful and ambitious choir of the Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences (JAMK) directed by Rita Varonen. Their name originates from the Latin words canti and novum. Together these words become the identity of the choir and mean 'new song'. At present, there are approximately 30 Singers in the choir for whom music is a passionate interest – for many it is also a future profession. Many of the Singers, either study or work at the Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences or the University of Jyväskylä. The repertoire of Cantinovum is colorful and varied. It spans from folk music to sacred music and from Renaissance to modern composers. It is very characteristic of Cantinovum to perform songs that have been specially composed for them. They have had the honour of premiering more than a dozen compositions both nationally and internationally. The CD is expertly conducted by the choir's musical director, James Sherlock and guest instrumentalists are 17-year old Edward Picton-Turbevill on the organ and award-winning young cellist James Barralet playing the solo part in Sir John Tavener's 'Svyati' for cello and choir. The enthusiastic group of Singers from Lucerne and its surroundings is lead by young conductor Andreas Felber. molto cantabile was soon recognised by the Swiss audience thanks to their success at various competitions. In 2005 the ensemble won the audience award as well as the special award of the jury of the Swiss Choir Competition in Glarus, while in 2007 it was awarded the 1st place at the Valiant Forum for Young Orchestras and Choirs at the Murten Classic Summer Festival. In addition, molto cantabile has taken part in several renowned international choir competitions where it has proved to belong to the leaders of the international choir scene. In May 2004 the ensemble took part in the European Music Festival in Neerpelt, Belgium, where it was awarded 1st prize summa cum laude with 99/100 points.
