Chamber Choir Cantinovum (established in 1989) is the youthful and ambitious choir of the Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences (JAMK) directed by Rita Varonen. Their name originates from the Latin words canti and novum. Together these words become the identity of the choir and mean 'new song'. At present, there are approximately 30 Singers in the choir for whom music is a passionate interest – for many it is also a future profession. Many of the Singers, either study or work at the Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences or the University of Jyväskylä.
The repertoire of Cantinovum is colorful and varied. It spans from folk music to sacred music and from Renaissance to modern composers. It is very characteristic of Cantinovum to perform songs that have been specially composed for them. They have had the honour of premiering more than a dozen compositions both nationally and internationally. Some of the composers include: Jussi Chydenius, Jan Hellberg, Juha Holma, Heikki Korhonen, Ilkka Kuus... less

The Lea Singers' latest CD -- 'Jubilea' -- features almost exclusively English music (with the exception of the final item -- the 'Ave maris stella' from the Monteverdi Vespers); and the English music represented ranges from sacred and secular favourites -- Howells' 'Like as the hart' and Sullivan's 'The long day closes' -- to works commissioned from contemporary composers (Judith Bingham's 1997 work 'Gleams of a remoter world' and a setting of the Nunc Dimittis, written in 2010 by one of the choir's own basses, John Pickard). The CD is expertly conducted by the choir's musical director, James Sherlock and guest instrumentalists are 17-year old Edward Picton-Turbevill on the organ and award-winning young cellist James Barralet playing the solo part in Sir John Tavener's 'Svyati' for cello and choir. The vocal blend throughout is first-rate and the choral sound is refined. There are a number of vocal solos on offer in many of the pieces and all are performed with aplomb -- I parti... less

Reformed in 2012 in honor of former faculty and accomplished choral arranger Bernell Hales, the 24-28 member U Chamber Choir maintains the high choral standards he set in his twenty years at the U. The choir covers a wide range of repertoire and styles, especially focusing on those that push choral music into new, exciting arenas.
The U Chamber Choir performs numerous works by conductor Barlow Bradford, an active composer and arranger, as well as private commissions by other renowned composers. The Chamber Choir often collaborates with other ensembles, both from the School of Music and off campus, including Dr. Bradford’s professional choir, the Utah Chamber Artists.
Students in the U Chamber Choir participate in the highest quality choral experience, advancing their vocal technique, knowledge of choral repertoire and musicianship. The choirs under Dr. Bradford’s direction are known for their beauty of tone, musical nuance, and clear, ringing sound
