Audio recording by Matt Curtis (Choral Tracks). Jeff Brechlin won The Washington Post's Style Invitational in March 2003 with his poem The Hokey Poke. The competition asked readers to rewrite some banal instructions in the stvle of a famous writer. Brechlin chose to rewrite one verse of the traditional dance song The Hokey Pokey as if written by William Shakespeare, for which he won the prize of a shotgun shell salt and pepper shaker. It has become one of the most significant Czech music ensembles during its history and it is desired not only in the Czech Republic but also abroad. The ensemble is currently formed by these Singers: Jakub Kubín (countertenor), Martin Ptáček (tenor), Lukáš Merkl (tenor), Radek Mach (tenor), Aleš Malý (baritone), Martin Struna (baritone), Richard Uhlíř (bass), and Václav Kovář (bass). The repertoire of the ensemble includes the periods from the Gregorian chant up till arrangements of modern popular melodies while the most important part is formed by the vocal compositions of the 19th and 20th century, Czech, Moravian and Slovak folk songs and contemporary compositions which were often arranged or even composed directly for the Gentlemen Singers by composers with whom the ensemble cooperates closely (e.g. Jan Vičar, Jaroslav Krček, Jan Jirásek, Stephen Hatfield, or Mark van Platen).
