Membership is open to anyone with or without choral experience. We aim for high standards, and of course strong singers are always valued – but you don’t have to be able to read music, and there are no auditions. the age range of members stem from 20 to over 70 so there is room for everyone. If you’re not sure which voice part you are then Christopher Wray, our Musical Director, can help you with this. the Choir performs three public concerts each year, at Easter, in the Summer and at Christmas. We also support the local communities by singing at various events and this includes raising funds for charities. Each year we also sing away from London which combines singing to another community, or combining a performance with their choir, with a fun day out. At times we take more extensive trips and you can see details on these events in our ‘News Items’ section of the website. FHCS is also a very social Choir and apart from a...    onclick="$(this).getParent().getPrevious().style.display='';$(this).getParent().style.display='none';">less

He shall feed me in a Green pasture : and lead me forth beside the waters of comfort. He shall convert my soul : and shall bring me forth in the paths of righteousness, for his Name's sake. Yea, thou I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil : for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff comfort me. Thou shalt prepare a table before me 'gainst them that trouble me : thou anointedst my head with oil, and my cup shall be full. But thy loving-kindness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life : and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. For Thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff comfort me. (Psalm 23) Sung at Canterbury Cathedral during our Royal School of Church Music Summer Course in 1986, under Martin How. I (David W Solomons) was one of the altos. John Huntley - a fellow alto - recorded this performance.  onclick="$(this).getParent().getPrevious().style.display='';$(this).getParent().style.display='none';">less

Its aim is to provide opportunities for young singers at the early stages of performing careers, as well as for talented musicians who have chosen not to pursue careers in the music, but wish to continue singing to a high standard. they currently comprise singers from many established choirs, including Birmingham Conservatoire Chamber Choir, Ex Cathedra, Armonico Consort, the Choir of Royal Holloway, Genesis Sixteen, Portsmouth Cathedral and York Minster. the group specialises in undiscovered or little-known British music, and in the music of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Working with its Guest Conductor, Neil Ferris, Convivium Singers have recorded two discs of contemporary choral music by Jonathan Dove (NAXOS – due March 2012) and Hugh Benham (Convivium Records – due November 2011). We are an amateur auditioned choir of 30 and strive for a high standard, so for potential members it is important to have a reasonable sight-singing ability. We rehearse regularly throughout the year on a Thursday evening. the music we perform is very varied and as well as psalms we sing a wide range of canticles, masses and anthems of all genres so “Variety is the spice of life”! there is no membership fee, as we are fortunate to be supported financially with grants from the Cathedral Chapter and the Friends of Wells Cathedral. When we are in the Cathedral we are often singing in the Quire where we face one another, effectively as tw...    onclick="$(this).getParent().getPrevious().style.display='';$(this).getParent().style.display='none';">less

At the wall's base the fiery nettle springs, With fruit globose and fierce with poison'd stings; In every chink delights the fern to grow, With glossy leaf and tawny bloom below: the few dull flowers that o'er the place are spread Partake the nature of their fenny bed. these, with our sea-weeds, rolling up and down, Form the contracted flora of our town.  onclick="$(this).getParent().getPrevious().style.display='';$(this).getParent().style.display='none';">less
