As a part of the historic community of Worcester Cathedral, the Choir has gained a reputation for musical sensitivity and ground breaking performance. The Choir was founded in 1998 by its musical director, Stephen Shellard, in order to draw together a group of high quality singers from the local area to develop a concert repertoire and further enrich the choral tradition of Worcester Cathedral. This smallest and most select of the Hofstra Choirs comprises the best singers at the University, both within and outside the Department of Music, and focuses on the distinct art of unaccompanied, or a cappella, ensemble singing, presented in carefully chosen performance spaces that are uniquely attuned to celebrate the human voice's potential. From an educational standpoint, the ensemble serves two main functions for the University. Their name originates from the Latin words canti and novum. Together these words become the identity of the Choir and mean 'new song'. At present, there are approximately 30 singers in the Choir for whom music is a passionate interest – for many it is also a future profession. Many of the singers, either study or work at the Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences or the University of Jyväskylä. The repertoire of Cantinovum is colorful and varied. It spans from folk music to sacred music and from Renaissance to modern composers. It is very characteristic of Cantinovum to perform songs that have been specially composed for them.
