Its activities soon expanded and now include a regular concert programme, weddings and services throughout Staffordshire and the West Midlands, and guest appearances at other cathedrals. The Choir has a versatile repertoire of sacred and secular music ranging from the Renaissance to the contemporary, and it enjoys the challenge of new and experimental writing. Bray Choral Society is a successful choir performing a wide range of Choral works including major works by Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Vivaldi, Mendelssohn and Rossini, along with short concerts and recitals including Byrd, Bach, Elgar, Stanford an...  moreBray Choral Society is a successful choir performing a wide range of Choral works including major works by Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Vivaldi, Mendelssohn and Rossini, along with short concerts and recitals including Byrd, Bach, Elgar, Stanford and also works by composers of the 20th and 21st centurys such as Orff, Rutter, Bodley, De Barra, Jenkins, Goodall, Whitacre, Gjeilo and Blackford. We have taken part in many Choral competitions around Ireland with Success in New Ross, Arklow, Navan, Sligo and Cork. In 2013 we joined Wide Open Music in a performance of Beethoven's 9th Symphony, which was received with great enthusiasm. In the same year we also joined Opera Theatre Company for two performances in their tour to promote young Irish soloists. In recognition of the millennium year and augmented by local choirs from around the country, we performed the Verdi Requiem to great acclaim in both Bray and Arklow. We rehearsed for most of the day in ...  moreOn 24th November 2012 we brought together 98 singers and four Choral directors for our most ambitious project to date: a Choral workshop on Thomas Tallis' monumental 40-part motet, 'Spem in Alium', composed in 1570. We rehearsed for most of the day in two-choir sections, with our four Choral directors, Scott Inglis-Kidger, Sarah Tenant-Flowers, Riccardo Bonci and Jonny Davies. After lunch we began to put the sections together. At 4pm we brought all 8 choirs together and Scott Inglis-Kidger led a most thrilling final performance. Under its dynamic and energetic conductor, Ian Allan, the choir gives two regular concerts, usually at Christmas and in the Summer, and also takes part in the Mary Wakefield Festival in Kendal. In addition, rehearsals are taken by the deputy conductor, Tracie Penwarden, who is not only one of the region's leading sopranos but a superb choir trainer to boot. With the addition of David Edmonds as their accompanist, Arnside Choral Society benefits from the expertise of three professionals, each with different specialisms. Rehearsals take place at Arnside's WI Hall in Orchard Road on Tuesdays at 7.30 and we offer a very warm welcome to anybody wishing to join us in singing a variety of styles.
