After one season, Gerald Moved to Montreal and...  moreThe Choir was founded in 1964 by Gerald Wheeler, organist and choirmaster of St MatThew's Church in Ottawa. The choir consisted of 20 singers. The first concert was December 1964 at The National Gallery. After one season, Gerald Moved to Montreal and Brian Law took over as director of St MatThew's church and took over directing The Cantata Singers as well. In 1969, The choir was invited to sing Purcell's Dido and Aneas at The new National Arts Centre in November. To balance The NAC Orchestra, The choir increased in size to 44 members. The CSO became The choir in residence of The NAC and has performed in many NAC productions over The years, singing under many world renowned conductors such as, Eduardo Mata, Helmuth Rilling, Franz Paul Decker, Andrew Parrott, Trevor Pinnock, Ermanno Florio, Ivor Bolton, Richard Hickox, Paul Goodwin, Andreas Delfs, Jane Glover, Martin Pearlman, William Boughton, Thierry Fischer, Gerald Wirth, Earl Stafford, Frank McNamara, David Lockington and Eric Kunzel among oThers. It started life as The James Ashworth Singers giving its first concert in Thornton Parish Church in April 1976. After some years The base Moved to The Unitarian Church near St Luke’s Hospital to be more central for members coming from all parts of Bradford and The surrounding area. In 1979 James Ashworth Moved on to projects new and was succeeded by Douglas Robinson who had recently retired as Chorus Master at Covent Garden and who held The post until ill health forced his retirement. During this period The name was changed first to The Ashworth Singers and later to The Bradford Chorale. John Coates took over as Musical Director in 1984 and was followed by Tricia Platts in 1991. Since Tricia’s departure The Chorale has been led by several Musical Directors including Carleton ETherington, Andrew Dibb, Elizabeth Altman, John Griffiths and Christopher Rathbone.
