Biography: The Crossing is a twenty-four-member professional chamber choir conducted by Donald Nally dedicated to new music. Originally formed by a group of friends in 2005, the ensemble has since grown exponentially and “has made a name for itself in recent years as a champion of new music.” - New York Times 2/14. Since 2008 the St. Lawrence Choir has been under the direction of Michael Zaugg. The Swiss-born musician has distinguished himself as an innovative and versatile conductor on the Canadian choral scene. Active as artistic director, guest conductor, pedagogue and clinician, Michael Zaugg brings a wealth of experience and creativity to his work. St. Lawrence Choir was formed in 1972 by Iwan Edwards and a group of singers residing in the West Island of Montreal. They take their name after Bruce Springsteen’s album The Seeger Sessions, since their first concert took place at a lecture on American Folk Music when Springsteen was touring Italy in 2006. In 2011 they published their first CD, Songs of Freedom, a collection of protest songs with a strong connection to the Civil Rights Movement. In 2015 TSV published their first original single, “Graces (Dropping Again)” written by ZogaroS. In 2017 TSV will release a concept album of 16 songs and vocal interludes composed and produced by all the girls. “Broken Dream”, written by Chiara Cortez and Emanuele Jorma Gasperi, is the first single published to launch the record.  less

The three- and four-voice motets recorded by the young ladies of the Sjaella sextet and the five yo...  moreCommemorating the 70th anniversary of Hugo Distler's death, two successful vocal Ensembles from Leipzig perform together on a single CD for the first time. The three- and four-voice motets recorded by the young ladies of the Sjaella sextet and the five young gentlemen of the Ensemble Nobiles represent some of the highlights from Distler's choral oeuvre: the Jahrkreis op. 5, and the Geistliche Chormusik op. 12. One of the composer's best-known works, the Totentanz op. 12 no. 2, stands at the heart of this disc. The fourteen motets for Eternity Sunday contained in the Totentanz op. 12 no. 2 were set to music by Hugo Distler and form the work's musical part. Distler accompanies the motets with non-musical verses that narrate a dialogue between death and his numerous victims.While on the present recording some of the victims' roles are spoken by the singers themselves, Heinz-Martin Benecke lends death his charismatic voice.
