This new commission revolves around the creation of a person with endless potential. The Text centres on a well-know whakatauki or proverb:
Whāia te iti kahurangi, ki te tuohu koe, Me he maunga teitei
[Seek that which you treasure most – if you must bow your head, let it be to the loftiest of mountains]
A mihi pepeha, hailing the fabrics of space and the throes of the heart, is joined by the organ – a giant celestial factory, chaotic and cacophonous, with great starry arms placing pieces into unique moulds forming the fragMents of the final section of the work – a mighty invocation of the whakatauki. less

The evangelist tells the story, arias convey the inner feelings of us humans as we gaze upon the Golgotha scene and choruses and chorales reflect on our own place in the drama. Bach's incredible work of art stands alone in its complete telling of the crucifixion story in a manner which stirs and moves the soul of the perforMer and listener. This is a mountaintop experience not to be missed. less

The Text draws from (and paraphrases) several sources: contemporary Media, Emma Lazarus’ “The New Colossus,” the Bible’s Matthew 25:31-40, currency, and others. The changing Meters of “Border” fill the work with an up-tempo, rhythmic energy that propels it forward. Campbell’s piece hardly relents, even as the pace slows this work presses forward with a colorful and often modal harmonic language. “Border” is a call for justice, empathy and compassion, a summons to our collective conscience. less
