In...  moreWe are a historic symphonic chorus that continues to play a vibrant role in the cultural life of the National Capital Region. With approximately 100-115 auditioned members and a professional core of 12 voices,the choir's repertoire spans 6+ centuries . In addition to our annual subscription series, we sing with both the National Arts Centre Orchestra and the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra . The choir has made five international tours to Italy, Spain, Germany and the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom and Ireland . Following an extensive search which attracted a roster of highly- accomplished choral directors, the impressive and charismatic young conductor and keyboard artist, Jordan de Souza, was appointed Artistic Director and Principal Conductor in July, 2013. It has evolved into an ensemble determined to reinvent itself continuously as it develops a sound that is artistically intelligent. In its 14-year history, Novo Concertante Manila has competed and won in several international choral competitions. Among which are the 2nd Choir Olympics in Busan, South Korea(2002), the 1st A Voyage of Songs International Chorale Competition in Genting Highlands, Malaysia (2003) and the 23rd Takarazuka International Chamber Choir Competition in Takarazuka, Japan (2007). In 2009, the choir won the 1st and 2nd Prizes at the 46th Internationaler Chorwettbewerb in Spittalan der Drau, Austria and the 1st Prize at the 55th Certamen International de Habaneras y Polifonia in Torrevieja, Spain. This was the fourth and last Song performed in the final round of Folklore Acappela Category -- World Choir Games 2006 in Xiamen, China. To have control over something matterless, we control it with the knowledge about it and thus gain power over it. The almost sinister thought “I'll tell you. You're young, but you're one of us, and I'm one of us, so I'll tell you.” gives the Toxic Psalms its tone. For in the background of the whole concert arch death utters and murderous plague intones. Through the music the project reflects Palestine, Syria, Pussy Riots, weapons, concentration camps, blood feuds, extinctions, contaminations of religions and creates a picture of human brutality. The living of a man is changed into a drama here and now: men killing for the glory of their psalms. This new version by Kirsten Pagel, is for a female quartet, with rich dark harmonies and a tender, aching feel. We dedicate it to all who have passed through war, both in the past and unfortunately now, in the present. We also sing it for those within our communities that have recently lost a loved one. It has been such a difficult time to be grieving. We sing it for you to remember the best times, the friendship and the comradery and most of all, for the love that you shared together.
