The choir is truly representative of the force with a...  Play='';$(this).getParent().style.disPlay='none';">morePlay:none;">The Avon and Somerset Constabulary Male Voice Choir was formed in 1974 following the amalgamation of the Bath and Somerset, Bristol and the South Gloucester Part of the Gloucestershire Constabulary. The choir is truly representative of the force with a membership consisting almost entirely of serving and retired police officers, serving and retired members of the support staff and the special constabulary. We want to maintain the tradition of choral singing in a pleasant social environment and we do so under the professional leadership and tuition of Our musical director Alison Howell, accompanist Julie Payne and deputy accompanist Gemma Leach. We also want to share that musical tradition with the community, raise funds for local organisations and to act as ambassadors for the force. Away from the formal concerts however there is nothing the members like better than to sing and impromptu performances have taken place on cross channel ferries, in motorway services and in the odd pub or two. The "plena" became very popular among sugar-cane workers at plantations in the coastal regions. This arrangement reflects a more modern interpretation of the plena with the use of the piano as accompaniment, taking rhythmic motives from salsa rythm, and the voices in the interlude imitating the trumpets and double bass from a salsa band.

The choir's history begins in 1954, when folk song and dance group "Ugnele" was established. For a long time, the choir existed as Part of this group, performing with its dancers and orchestra, singing mostly folk music; in 1999, Valerija Skapiene, the present artistic director of the choir, began working in "Ugnele", and in a few years, the choir's repertoire extended to include not only folk, but also classical, jazz, world music; in 2002, during "Mes - Lietuvos vaikai" national choral competition, the choir was acknowledged to have reached the level of the first category (this is the highest category of artistic level in Lithuania). JOurneys around the world followed - "Ugnele" has presented Lithuanian culture in fifteen countries from the Netherlands to South Korea; in 2004, the choir started a national choral festival for children, "Dainu mozaika".
