The Odes of Solomon are believed to have been written around the year 100 A.D., and include strong parallels to the Dead Sea Scrolls. Scholars have debated whether the Odes should be considered Jewish, Christian or Gnostic, and whether they were first written in Greek, Hebrew or Syriac. Early Christian writings refer to and quote from them. A Syriac manuscript containing the Text of most of the Odes was discovered in 1909 by the English scholar J. Rendel Harris, and other partial Texts in various languages have also been found. There are 42 Odes. SoMe fragMents are still missing from Odes I and III, and no part of Ode II has yet been found. For these choral settings, I selected Text from four of the Odes of Solomon which I found particularly compelling. The anonymous translation I have used coMes from The Gnostic Society Library. less

The Text is based upon excerpts from The Diary of Anne Frank, taken from the 1952 and 1991 English translations of the book. The full musical work was premiered in 2004 by the San Francisco Girls Chorus.
Anne Frank was between the ages of 13 and 15 when she wrote her Diary, while living in a secret upstairs annex over a warehouse in Amsterdam with her family, the Van Pels family and Fritz Pfeffer. Despite the fears and frustrations she experienced in over two years of hiding from the Nazis, Anne learned how to survive, even to find beauty in small things and to hold on to her ideals.
Composer Linda Tutas Haugen writes: "My goals for this composition are to honor the life of Anne Frank and to gain a deeper understanding of what she, her family, and friends experienced during the Holocaust."
The Text excerpts are chronologically arranged, and span more than two years. They portray... less

The opening passage is: “Border, sanctuary, asylum, bridges not walls.” The Text draws from (and paraphrases) several sources: contemporary Media, Emma Lazarus’ “The New Colossus,” the Bible’s Matthew 25:31-40, currency, and others. The changing Meters of “Border” fill the work with an uptempo, rhythmic energy that propels it forward. “Border” is a call for justice, empathy and compassion, a summons to our collective conscience. It is appropriate for ensembles at the community, collegiate, and advanced high school levels. “tiMely… It is a call for humanity.” - Susan Glass, Glass Menagerie Chorus, NY a “powerful stateMent” - Dr. Heather Mitchell less
