The choir has close links with the Gre...  moreThe (Dutch) Utrecht Byzantine Choir (Utrechts Byzantijns Koor, UBK) was founded in 1951. It sings both Slavic-Byzantine and Ukrainian folk music. The choir sings in the Ukrainian and old-church slavonic languages. The choir has close links with the Greek-catholics (in Ukraine). For decades, the choir strived to keep Ukrainian (liturgical and worldly) culture alive. It did so whilst the Greek-catholic Church fought to survive its suppressors. It continues to do so, joining in the happiness of the Greek-catholics' freedom today. The choir was founded by Ukrainian born and raised musicologist Myroslaw Antonowycz (+2006). At present, the Utrecht Byzantine Choir is directed by Grigori Sergei Sarolea. Grigori was born and raised in a Slavic-byzantine church community in The Hague. Papandopulo composed "Pozdrav Zori dalmatinskoj" on August 1st 1976 in Opatija (Croatia). Written in 1844 by Ana Vrdoljak, a poetess from Imostski (Croatia), the lyrics of this song date back to the times of Illyrian movement, celebrating the launching of the magazine "Zora dalmatinska", a literary and educational weekly issued in Zadar, thus being the first Croatian literary magazine to be issued outside Zagreb (from 1844 to 1849). The song was published on the cover of the No. 44 of the magazine, issued on October 28th 1844.  less

Artistic Director: Wallis Peterson. The joik is a unique form of cultural expression for the Sami people in northern Scandinavia. Each joik is meant to reflect a person or place. This does not mean that it is a song about the person or place, but that the joiker is attempting to transfer "the essence" of that person or place into song—one joiks their friend, not about their friend. This joik is the essence of a young boy's dream of riding through the snow on the back of a reindeer.  less
