Audio recording by Matt Curtis (Choral Tracks). Jeff Brechlin won The Washington Post's Style Invitational in March 2003 with his poem The Hokey Poke. The competition asked readers to rewrite some banal instructions in the stvle of a famous writer. Brechlin chose to rewrite one verse of the traditional dance song The Hokey Pokey as if written by William Shakespeare, for which he won the prize of a shotgun shell salt and pepper shaker. The choir has a wide-ranging repertoire – from traditional sacred music to modern, contemporary compositions, popular arrangements and music from around the world. They perform regular concerts in London and the South East, as well as touring each year, with recent trips including Italy, Slovenia, Croatia and Greece. In 2025 the choir celebrated their 10th Birthday year, and the 25th anniversary of the founding of Northern Spirit Singers. Rehearsing monthly in central London, Southern Spirit Singers aim to perform the very highest standards of choral music in a relaxed and fun environment.
