They are also the c...  moreThe Birralee Blokes are the winners of the 2012 International Kathaumixw "Choir of the World" award and also the winners of the Youth Section in the same competition, held in Canada in July. They are also the current ABC Classic FM Choir of the Year. In addition to this they were judged Youth Choir of the Year and also received the Listeners' Choice Award. In 2008 they were part of the Channel 7 Battle of the Choirs TV show, making it as far as the quarter finals, where they met their Waterloo with ABBA's Song of the same name. Membership is drawn from state and independent secondary schools and universities and there is a strong emphasis placed on inclusion for any young man who enjoys singing and expresses a desire to develop as a musician. Òran began as an alumni offshoot of the Kokopelli Youth Choir, but it has since developed into a group made up of young adults from all over Edmonton and the surrounding area. Each brings a different viewpoint to the group, but all are united in their passion for singing. The choir stresses the same philosophical goals as its younger counterpart, striving to achieve musical excellence and artistic integrity, as well as combining new interpretive techniques with more traditional choral expertise. Above all, the group is dedicated to sharing joy in Song with each other, with other choirs, and with audiences around Edmonton and across Canada. We began with the singular purpose of ministry and spreading the gospel. ​Since incorporation, NGGC now operates under two mandate objectives: to develop the professional and musical skills of young adults 20-30 years of age; and to bring gospel music as a respected genre of music, along with its more evolved counterparts (Jazz and Classical music), in Canada. Gospel Music has served vitally in the development of all members who have joined NGGC. Our unique incorporation, interpretation, and delivery of this embodied form of art, has garnered multiple forms of support — like spectators; organizations; donors; and sponsors alike — granting us the ability to develop both the musical and professional skills of our members in tandem.  less

Founded in 1934, the Victoria Choral Society has played a leading role in Victoria's cultural life, and has performed with every Victoria Symphony conductor since the Symphony’s inception. The choir was created after 200 singers, representing most of the church choirs of the day in Victoria, assembled in 1934 to sing Messiah. They agreed to continue singing together to promote choral music, and the Victoria Choral Society, at that time called the Victoria Choral Union, was formed. The instrumentalists who played with the choir later formed the Victoria Symphony.
