The choir was established in 1996 (originally in the Lehava High School for Girls) by singer/choral conductor Nomi Teplow with the goal of bringing together girls with Musical ability to work on a highly professional level and produce a wide variety of vocal Music. The choir is comprised of 25-30 girls from areas throughout Samaria ranging in age from 13-18 years. The Shir-El choir performs in concerts and at vocal conventions across the country bringing fine singing, rich harmonies and words of hope, faith and love of Israel to a broad range of audiences. The Winneba Youth choir, known to be the number one choral Music group in the country was founded in May 1989, under the patronage of Mr. George Mensah-Essilfie and Mr. John Francis Arthur-Yamoah (Paa John). The choir has progressed steadily to the extent that it is now recognized as the most outstanding Youth choir of the nation. Two years after its founding, it was awarded 1st Prize at the 29th National Music Competition for Young Artists (NAMCYA) held at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. The group performed in various events such as Miss Earth Pageant in 2003 and 2004. The group was also one of the featured artists in the Samu’t-Saring Tinig V at the Cultural Center of the Philippines; in a concert at the Clamshell in Intramuros in February 2003; and in the International Youth Music Festival sponsored by NAMCYA held at the CCP in December 2003. In 2004, the choir released its debut CD featuring Ilocano favourites and winning competition pieces. In 2005, the choir was handed over to its new conductor, Sherberk Cabrales. In this time the choir has participated in the Madrid Community choir contest, obtaining the first prize in 2009 and 2010, and the secón prize in 2007 and 2008 Within the choir activities, we could also mention their participation in theatre productions of the Musicals Persephone and Midas by Steve Pogson, with which they obtained the first prize in the Vademorillo theatre contest. They were also awarded first prize in the Community of Madrid theatre contest, with the Musical Super Jim, a play which was written specially for the choir by the British authors Steve Pogson and George Simmers. It was most recently awarded the OPUS KLASSIK in 2021 for the Music film „STIMMENÜBERLEBEN“ (Anne Frank: A Living Voice) and the „Kinderchorlandpreis“ of the Deutsche Chorjugend for very good children‘s choir work.
