Tracing its beginnings to the year 1921, the ACGC was formed to answer the need for liturgical music in San Ignacio Church, in Manila. The Choir has then pioneered many firsts as a Filipino chorale group and student organization. Locally, they have triumphed in numerous competitions, including the National Music Competitions for Young Artists (NAMCYA). The ACGC has then on proudly carried the name of the Philippines during their International Tours in Europe, Asia, and North America. Since 2002, Professor Maria Lourdes V. Hermo leads the ACGC as the group’s first female conductor. Under her baton, the group has released two commercial recordings. In 2006, the group participated in numerous European competitions, where they swept all prizes in Miltenberg, Germany and garnered high awards in Arezzo, Italy. Hymns and other song ministration were handled by Gospel Dynamics in the University of Cape Coast (UCC) Local of the Union. Some GHAMSU members of the 2003/2004 year group who were also part of Gospel Dynamics then thought it wise to establish a Choir because the feel of Methodism was missing in the Union. It all started when Brother Ernest Morgan Acquah, Brother Ebenezer Edem Beble, Brother Charles Aaron Adams Ekuban and Brother Fredrick Amissah usually meet in the evenings to sing hymns. These brothers decided to establish a Choir in GHAMSU. The then executives did not want to accept the decision of forming a Choir simply because they thought the Union was doing alright with Gospel Dynamics. Open to students, faculty, staff, and community members, the Choral Union performs 3-4 concerts per year with the Drew University Festival Orchestra in the Concert Hall of the Dorothy Young Center for Arts.
