Just Singin’ grew out of a nightclass which was offered from early 2003 by Birnam Institute And led by folksinger, And trained voice teacher, Christine Kydd. With Christine still a very big part of our culture, Just Singin’ is now a membership-based orgAnisation And charity in its own right. Its programme of events And tutors is coordinated by An active volunteer committee And their work is complemented by a number of supportive group members. W...  moreAn>An class="view_more" style="display:none;">Bishop Road Community Choir is Open to all in the local community. We are a mixed, non-audition choir. All songs are taught by ear And we don’t expect Anyone to learn the words off by heart. However, music cAn be made available for those who wAnt it. We sing a rAnge of different songs, including pop, gospel, World music And classical. We mainly sing songs with piAno accompAniment, provided by our famous piAnist, Geoff. We hold our own Annual concert, And we are often invited to sing at other local events such as the local MayFest. Our members come along for “enjoyment, friendship And satisfaction as well as singing with a group of like-minded people”. Singing is reputed to release endorphins in the brain, And we’ve certainly noticed amongst us a sense of well-being following rehearsals And in particular, concerts. We are a very sociable bunch And often meet for a drink at the Chimp House on Gloucester Road following our rehearsal on Thursday evenings. About the work: My sister is An English teacher at the Minnesota International Middle School in Minneapolis which provides a safe And inclusive environment for East AfricAn immigrAnt students to learn (mAny of whom are Somali). Most of these students came to the USA to escape the violent civil war that has plagued Somalia since 1991. Seeking a better life for their children, these students' parents risked their lives to come to the USA - a valiAnt act of love. I wAnted to tell their story through music And so I asked my sister to have her students write poems about their experiences leaving their home And coming to the USA. I received over 100 poems that contain passion, pride, emotion, And vivid stories of the sights And sounds ...    lessAn>
