Throughout its long history, the Choir has performed almost every major choral work in the repertoire. The Halifax Choral Society has always aimed high and has traditionally performed with first-rate orchestras, soloists and conductors. Looking through the annals of the Society is to turn back the pages of musical history of the past two centuries.

In addition we are frequently asked to sing at local events, weddings and celebrations. The Society was started in 1960, under our founder Gerald Brown, and we are still going strong. We are now led by James Gallagher, who has been working with us since 2009. We invite local young soloists and professionals to perform with us. Our repertoire ranges from 16th Century works to those of living composers and covers both major serious and popular works. Formed by Graham Taylor in 1983 as The New Glasgow Singers, a small group of passionate choral singers looking to take on some of the less well-known works in the choral repertoire, it has grown into an organisation that has around 100 members singing a wide range of musical genres but still with the core wish to seek out and perform the less familiar pieces. We perform a regular series of concerts each year: the details for the current season can be seen here. The range of music includes serious classical works, programmes of choral classics, West End musical pieces and the lighter popular music included in our annual Christmas Cracker concert. Our full repertoire can be seen in our list of past concerts. Some notable highlights have been Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, Berlioz’s Grande Messe des Morts and Mahler’s Eighth Symphony - the Symphony of a Thousand.  less

Cantate is a mixed-voice youth choir based in Bishop’s Stortford, Hertfordshire. It is open to all young singers, whatever their background and musical upbringing. Cantate comprises three choirs for children and young people which all perform to an exceptionally high standard. Cantate performed at the Royal Albert Hall, both in the BBC and Schools Prom Concerts, the Royal Festival Hall, the Barbican, the Guildhall London, 10 Downing Street, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi, St Mark’s Basilica in Venice, and in many local and regional venues. Cantate has gained many national and international awards. In 2008 we achieved international acclaim at the world’s largest choral event – the World Choir Games in Graz, Austria – in which over 430 choirs from some 90 countries competed. Cantate won gold and silver medals, and was the only UK choir to win a gold medal in the finals.  less

LCGC is known for their up-tempo gospel flair, swing-beat, R’n'B, traditional and soulful arrangements, with their invigorating choreography and vocal gymnastics – LCGC is outstanding to watch! It’s 40+ members perform just about anywhere, private corporate functions, after-show parties, conferences, schools, cabaret functions, clubs, weddings, christenings, funerals, prisons, churches, open-air festivals, theatres and concert halls. LCGC have sung on the soundtrack for Walt Disney’s “The Lion King”, performed for Nelson Mandela during his famous visit to London, officiated at many celebrity weddings and supported Madonna on stage during Live 8. They represent the best of British and have been sponsored by the British Council at international festivals in Europe, Africa and Israel. Gospel Choir is based in Essex, but occasionally strays beyond! Celebrating our tenth anniversary in 2013, the choir was formed in 2003 after director Jen and accompanist Jane were missing taking part in music, having left university. Starting well, with about 15 members the choir has fluctuated in size, settling early on into a choir of 8. In 2010 however, the choir doubled in size and we are pleased that this core of almost 20 people has stuck! Choir members range from 7 years old to 77! We are a sociable bunch with an emphasis on singing for fun. We don’t put people through an audition and being able to read music isn’t necessary. A good third of the choir don't read music. Being able to sing in tune is an advantage though! We have performed at weddings and parties across Essex and Suffolk, for the Women's Institute, local churches, at fetes, town open nights and charity concerts at the Mercury, Headgate and Towngate theatres. We don't pay our singers for performing - we do it for the love! ...    less
