Chantage won the BBC Radio 3 Choir of the Year competition in 2006, recorded live with Elbow at Abbey Road Studios in 2009 and is frequently featured on Classic FM and BBC radio. Chantage performs a wide range of repertoire, programming works traditionally performed by English chamber choirs aLongside lesser known works sourced from foreign choral cultures. Chantage was formed in 1999 by its Musical Director James Davey, and quickly established itself in London as a stylish and energetic young chamber choir. This whole competition took place at George Fox University in Newburg Oregon. The South Salem Saxons also took first at their Districts festival in Salem/Keizer Oregon. The choir continually strives to sing at professional standards under the expert musical directorship of David Crown. The choir has a varied programme throughout the year including charity concerts, festivals, workshops, Come and Sing events, CD recordings and a hugely popular Carol Concert.

Using the simple view that a good song is a good song, has meant that they bring together a collection of pieces that appeal to a wide audience. The choir delights in introducing new songs that are connected by their unique choral sound, rather than from a particular genre and it is this wide appeal and their sense of fun that has meant the group is in constant demand and continually attracts new members. Even in its early days the choir never quite conformed to the accepted norms of what should be included in their repertoire. Their confidence, infectious enthusiasm and passionate singing make them enchanting to watch. The style of singing is more 'pop' than classical and the choice of music reflects this, with the repertoire including show-tunes, popular songs from the 1930s to today, as well as classic barbershop arrangements. There are strong links to musical theatre in that most songs are choreographed, and performing skills are a key element in making a song work. We rehearse every Tuesday, 6:30pm-9:00pm, in central London between Kings Cross and St Paul's. We are also aiming at focusing more on choral projects and concerts than competitions so that our singers enjoy singing and get compensated for engaging in the choir. Choir members are taught Theory and History of music for free.
