The Girl choir of South Florida is the premier singing ensemble for young women in the tri-county area. The Girl choir, led by Artistic Director Wallis Peterson, has been extolled by the South Florida Sun-Sentinel as “imaginative, accessible, expressive, and entertaining”, gaining a reputation for delivering compelling concert programming. The Girl choir’s repertoire is broad, from ancient to modern, classical to popular, sacred to secular, and folk to Broadway, encompassing many cultures, faiths, and traditions. Over the past seven seasons, the Girl choir has commissioned and premiered works by noted choral composers, including Eleanor Daley, Bob Chilcott, and David Brunner. The two outer movements draw their words and inspiration from boisterous cries of 17th century market vendors as once featured in 'The Cries of London' by Orlando Gibbbons. The second movement features the words of a Scottish poet, William Dunbar (c. 1460-c.1520), in which he praises the English capital, and includes the line 'London, thou art the flower of cities all'. Together, these settings evoke a surprisingly contemporary impression of London's sights, sounds, and moods, inspiring some irresistible music, by turns contemplative and unquenchably thrilling. The choir are seated and are singing with their eyes closed - a method frequently used during rehearsals to develop listening skills, but which produced such lovely performances that whenever we get the opportunity to perform this piece this way we do!
