The Choir has close links with the Gre...  moreThe (Dutch) Utrecht Byzantine Choir (Utrechts Byzantijns Koor, UBK) was founded in 1951. It sings both Slavic-Byzantine and Ukrainian folk Music. The Choir sings in the Ukrainian and old-church slavonic languages. The Choir has close links with the Greek-catholics (in Ukraine). For decades, the Choir strived to keep Ukrainian (liturgical and worldly) culture alive. It did so whilst the Greek-catholic Church fought to survive its suppressors. It continues to do so, joining in the happiness of the Greek-catholics' freedom today. The Choir was founded by Ukrainian born and raised Musicologist Myroslaw Antonowycz (+2006). At present, the Utrecht Byzantine Choir is directed by Grigori Sergei Sarolea. Grigori was born and raised in a Slavic-byzantine church community in The Hague. The Choir has a multilingual playlist which extends from Armenian traditional folk songs to modern Armenian or non-Armenian songs. These songs are performed in different ways: - A capella - Accompanied by the piano - Accompanied by the Armenian folk traditional band - Accompanied by a modern contemporary band. Many Armenian Musicians from Armenia enrich the Choir's repertoire with their unique and creative works. Artistic Director: Wallis Peterson. The joik is a unique form of cultural expression for the Sami people in northern Scandinavia. Each joik is meant to reflect a person or place. This does not mean that it is a song about the person or place, but that the joiker is attempting to transfer "the essence" of that person or place into song—one joiks their friend, not about their friend. The Choir has built an international reputation and has made it a trademark to include newly written Music in its programmes. This is thanks to the work of Knut Nystedt (b. 1915), organist, composer and conductor, who returned to Norway in 1964 after studying in the USA and started a Choir at the Music department of the University of Oslo. The Choir continues to recruit members from the department of Music, as well as from the Norwegian Academy of Music in more recent years. The American choral tradition in which Nystedt was trained emphasises the importance of new Music – a practice Nystedt brought back with him to Oslo. Knut Nystedt’s Music became a vital element of Schola Cantorum’s repertoire. Tone Bianca Sparre Dahl became conductor in 2002, and has further established the Choir’s firm position in Norway’s Musical life. She has continued Nystedt’s tradition of performing modern Music.
