Hughes with accompaniment by pianist Lyudmila Lakisova. Dr. Hughes chose this piece of Music because of its emotionally powerful setting of a comforting and hopeful text. “This work encourages us through these difficult days and reminds us why we love choral Music,” he said. We hope the performance brings you comfort and peace.

We discuss the compositional process, including the philosophy she holds related to the "end product" for singers. Namely, the importance of the singers exploring their own communities and connections WHILE also exploring the Music. We also bounce ideas back and forth related to composers having to be careful about "over refining" a composition, as well as the Music world's attempt to balance goals of equity with the human need for each composer to be valued based on their OWN Music and individual expression. Friend of my heart,
The Freedom Trail now has eternal flames,
Set in six crystal towers which proclaim:
For each number etched into these glass walls,
There once beat a heart, which though stilled, yet calls-
Yes, for every number, there was a name.
Friend of my heart,
Walk on this sacred path of history,
Feel the numbers’ shadows falling free
Upon us, tracing tattoos without scars
On our souls, retracing those barbed wire bars
And numbers meant to wound our ... less

The Giovanni Consort is based in Perth, Western Australia, and is one of the city's most accomplished chamber Choirs. The Consort is comprised of a group of 12 core singers each of whom are experienced Musicians, with many having studied (or currently studying) Music at university and several others singing professionally around Perth. In addition to presenting stunning performances of sacred and secular choral Music from the Renaissance right through to the present day, the Consort also acts as a training ground for aspiring conductors, composers and profes... less
