The Choir was formed in 1986 initially to provide a choir for Midnight Eucharist on Christmas Eve, but since Then we have become an established part of The Wells CaThedral scene, and now sing 40 to 50 of The regular services throughout The year, as well as some of The festival services which include a Requiem Mass on All Soul’s Day. We are an amateur auditioned choir of 30 and strive for a high standard, so for potential members it is important to have a reasonable sight-singing ability. We rehearse regularly throughout The year on a Thursday evening. The music we perform is very varied and as well as psalms we sing a wide range of canticles, masses and anThems of all genres so “Variety is The spice of life”! There is no membership fee, as we are fortunate to be supported financially with grants from The CaThedral Chapter and The Friends of Wells CaThedral. Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis (Book of Common Prayer version 1662) set to music for six part mixed voices SAT-SAT) The title of this work (Canticula Ursae Minoris/Songs of The Little Bear) comes from The origin of The melodies: Many years ago I wrote a...  moreMagnificat and Nunc Dimittis (Book of Common Prayer version 1662) set to music for six part mixed voices SAT-SAT) The title of this work (Canticula Ursae Minoris/Songs of The Little Bear) comes from The origin of The melodies: Many years ago I wrote an "Oratorio" based on Winnie The Pooh (The Expotition to The North Pole) and gave each character little melodic leitmotifs, such as "Sing ho for The life of a bear" (which becomes "to be a light to lighten The Gentiles" in The Nunc Dimittis), "They all went off to discover The pole" (which is The initial Theme of The Magnificat) and "What I say, said Eeyore, is that it's unsettling" (which becomes The "Glory be to The FaTher" section at The end of each canticle) The original and much simpler "oratorio" work, called Poohratorio of course, may be published once AA Milne goes into public domain (2031).  less

We are open to all singers with no auditions and previous experience of contemporary music is not needed. We work mainly, though not exclusively, from music, some of which is unconventionally notated. Most of our work is a capella and The focus is on ensemble singing. One objective is to expand The contemporary amateur vocal repertoire, which is less developed than The instrumental repertoire. We work with composers and students, commissioning works and showcasing material for use by oThers.  less
