The song asks "who will look after this child, for it is truly without parents?" eMarabini is sung with a new meaning today as South Africa's orphan population continues to increase due to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The feeling behind this song is driven by a sense of hope rather than despair; as it was sung to win past struggles, it is now sung to overcome present struggles as well." The choir, which began at Brigham Young University as an early music Ensemble, transformed into one of the premier non-collegiate chamber groups in the Western United States. This award-winning Ensemble achieves high performance standards by drawing on the rich musical heritage of the region. Many Cantorum singers have solo careers and all have sung with top collegiate Ensembles. A number have also sung as members of The Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Utah Chamber Artists, and Salt Lake Vocal Artists. In addition, Cantorum is proud to have a high representation of talented choral educators. The group won both of its categories at the 2016 Interkultur competition and received special commendation for their performance of Dale Warland and Hugo Distler.
