Leach, perform sacred and secular music from the African and African-American choral traditions. The Choir, founded in 2005, is composed of alumni of the Essence of Joy Choir of The Pennsylvania State University. EOJAS has performed extensively in locations such as Pennsylvania, Alabama, Maryland, Virginia, Florida, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Washington D.C., Belgium, Luxembourg, and France. EOJAS is an official Alumni Interest Group (AIG) of the Penn State Alumni Association. EOJAS' mission is to learn, present, and promote African and African-American sacred and secular music in an effort to entertain, inspire, affirm and unify the worldwide Community. The Choir is a non-profit corporation registered in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and a tax exempt organization as defined in section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Tax Code. The choral programme starts with a general education for ages 5-7, before they are ready for Junior Choir (7-10), Intermediate Choir (10-13), Stage Choir or Youth Choir (13-18). Youth Choir contains over 80 singers, and the total number of singers meeting each week at the academy is over 180. The junior Choirs are directed by Mrs Kate Venvell, Stage Choir is directed by Richard Halton and Julie Gossage, and Youth Choir is directed by Tim Venvell.  less

Our repertoire is all original, written by Choir members and has emerged as a new tribal choral tradition that honors death as a natural, expected, sometimes very inspiring event in a life. While we don't require auditions, our welcome process is rigorous. This kind of singing is spiritual work and is deeply rewarding for those who are called to it.
