Spera means hope in Latin, and it is a members’ shared vision on music. All members studied a sacred Choral music under Koji Oguchi, choir director, when they were high school students. they were deeply touched by Oguchi’s music and established the Ensemble Choir SPERA. Making its debut in concert in March 2014 at Tokyo Opera City Recital Hall, SPERA’s music was highly prized and well-reviewed in newspapers. It serves in Masses and services and performs in concerts as an ecumenical choir, composed of students from Kitasato University, International Christian University, Hitotsubashi University and Rikkyo University.

Magnificat ranges in size from four to forty voices and performs a wide range of music, both a capella and with ensembles of period instruments.

Apart from a cappella works, choir perfoms both vocal and orchestral masterpieces such as Verdi's and Mozart's Requiem, Stabat Mater by Dvorak, Poulenc and Szymanowski, Beethoven's 9th Symphony or even J. S. Bach's Mass in h-minor widely regarded as the greatest and most demanding Choral piece of all time.
