The concert Theme focused on The damaging nature Of gossip and The larger meaning Of how words are powerful and have greater impact than we realize. Based on a well-known Jewish folk tale, The piece is largely sung in Yiddish, featuring narrated passages in English, with The moral resolution in Hebrew. The programme Of inspirational compositions by Beethoven, Brahms, Mendelssohn and Schumann is a perfect prelude to spring and encompasses The Romantic Themes Of dream, destiny, heroism, and panTheism. Brahms’ Schicksalslied (Song Of Destiny) contrasts heavenly bliss with The sorrows Of The human condition, while Schumann’s Nachtlied evokes The serene world Of sleep. Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture portrays The fall Of a once all-conquering hero and Mendelssohn’s Die Erste Walpurgisnacht is a dramatic musical rendition Of The clash between nature-worshipping Druidic tradition and new belief in a God disembodied from The natural world.
