Since its formation it has presented well over 100 perfor...  moreThe Elgar Chorale is a Worcester-based group of up to 40 Singers, founded by Dr Donald Hunt which has always specialised in English music, with a particular emphasis on the works of Edward Elgar. Since its formation it has presented well over 100 performances and ppeared at each of the Worcester Three Choirs Festivals from 1981 to 1996. Performances have included world premières of works by Sir Richard Rodney Bennett, Herbert Sumsion and Howard Blake, and a British première of Leonard Bernstein’s Missa Brevis. The Chorale was also the principal choral group at the highly successful Elgar Festivals at Worcester in 2007 and 2009, and last year enjoyed a concert tour in Devon, singing at Colyton, Dartmouth, Exeter and Torquay. It is proud to have Dame Janet Baker, C.H as its Patron.  less

The opening passage is: “Border, sanctuary, asylum, bridges not walls.” The text draws from (and paraphrases) several sources: contemporary media, Emma Lazarus’ “The New Colossus,” the Bible’s Matthew 25:31-40, currency, and others. The changing meters of “Border” fill the work with an uptempo, rhythmic energy that propels it forward. “Border” is a call for justice, empathy and compassion, a summons to our collective conscience. It is available through my website at http://cschurch.net/en/compositions/choir/o-magnum-mysterium/ and will be published by Carus-Verlag in July 2016. Program Note: It is difficult to follow with (yet) another setting of this famous text that has inspired so many composers over the centuries. In my attempt, “O magnum mysterium” returns three times after the first statement, in a similar gesture but each time shifted to a new tonality with even more flats. Thus, the listener gets ever more pulled into this magnificient text until the piece culminates in a jubilant “Alleluia” in C-major, having come full-circle back to very first harmony we heard.
