When founding member Rick Rosen left California in mid-2003 to move back to Bucks County, the original group of west coast singers went on hiatus. In its second life, and with the blessings of the founding Californians, Cordus Mundi was reborn in early 2005 in Bucks County. Now with fifteen voices, the newest incarnation of Cordus Mundi has the flexibility and versatility to expand the group’s musical exploration into new areas - the repertoire is varied and eclectic, and the group includes two composers and several arrangers. Cordus Mundi draws its repertoire from a wide range of composers and styles, from Dunstable to Duruflé, from Byrd to Bernstein, from Palestrina to Paranjoti, from Brahms to the Beatles, and from Jacob Handl to Edie Hill. It was recorded on 5th December 2010 in the Harvey Nichols Espresso Bar in Leeds' magnificent Victoria Quarter in the first of St Peter's Singers' now-traditional Sunday evening carol performances there. The choir is directed by Dr Simon Lindley, its Music Director since the Singers' formation in June 1977. In touring and recording, Belle Canto has distinguished itself as one of today’s foremost women’s ensembles. Originally a group of university students, the choir now consists of amateur singers from all walks of life. The group give a varied annual programme of concerts each year at Blackburn Cathedral (where they are based), and also take part in a number of services there throughout the church year.  

Psalm 23 is dedicated to my aunt Patricia Shaw of Vancouver, as this is her favourite Psalm. Two points of note: First, the composition grew out of the feeling that all 4 voices should start on the same note, grow outwards and then come back to that same note at the end. The rest just seemed to evolve on its own, seemingly guided by some external force. Second, unusually, I have asked choirs (where possible) to sing this without any breaks, via staggered breathing, as I wanted to highlight the deep conviction underlying the words of the Psalm, as one single thread of deep belief that moves from beginning to end. Our educational programs reflect this belief by training emerging professionals, planting seeds within young people for a lifetime of music involvement, and growing the skills of our own members.
