This smallest and most select of the Hofstra choirs comprises the best Singers at the University, both within and outside the Department of Music, and focuses on the distinct art of unaccompanied, or a cappella, ensemble singing, presented in carefully chosen performance spaces that are uniquely attuned to celebrate the human voice's potential. From an educational standpoint, the ensemble serves two main functions for the University. First, it acts as a laboratory for Hofstra’s future music educators, both undergraduate and graduate, providing outlets for the exploration of the art of ensemble preparation through the study of the highest-quality choral literature. Founded in September 2000 by a group of friends from the National Youth Choir of Great Britain, the choir comprises mainly of recent graduates and current students of Durham University, but also welcomes Singers from all over the North East, and includes ...  moreFounded in September 2000 by a group of friends from the National Youth Choir of Great Britain, the choir comprises mainly of recent graduates and current students of Durham University, but also welcomes Singers from all over the North East, and includes many of the region’s teachers. In May, the choir travelled to Italy to take part in the “Venezia in Musica” International Choral Competition. They won first prize in the secular music category, came runners up in the sacred music category, and received the “Outstanding Performance” prize for Bogorditsye Dyevo by Rachmaninov. They have been awarded “Choir of the Day” at all five BBC Radio 3 Choir of the Year regional rounds they have entered, and in 2008 reached the adult category finals in the Royal Philharmonic Hall in Liverpool, alongside the six other best adult choirs in the country. From its first steps it attracted attention to the musical community and it also achieved a significant success. Since 2000, the choir led by honored artist of Belarus Natalia Mihailova. Sacred music and jazz, classical and modern music organically and naturally coexist in the repertoire of the choir. The creative possibilities of the collective, consisting of 30 professional musicians, are inexhaustible. They constantly work on new programs of Russian works (D. Bortniansky, P. Tchaikovsky, S. Rachmaninov, G.Sviridov) and Western classics (I.S.Bach, G.Gendel, D.Bukstehude, W.A. Mozart). Then they prepared premieres of works by contemporary Belarusian composers as S.Kortes, V.Kopytko, A.
