The Choir has a wide-ranging repertoire – from traditional sacred music to modern, contemporary compositions, popular arrangements and music from around the world. They perform regular concerts in London and the South East, as well as touring each year, with recent trips including Italy, Slovenia, Croatia and Greece. In 2025 the Choir celebrated their 10th Birthday year, and the 25th anniversary of the founding of Northern Spirit Singers. Rehearsing monthly in central London, Southern Spirit Singers aim to perform the very highest standards of choral music in a relaxed and fun environment. Fondly referred to as POWERHOUSE, the Choir was formed in 1986 for a church building fund program. In 1988 the Choir was officially founded and directed under the leadership of Shawn Cotterell. With thirty-five voices and a multi-talented band, the Choir’s repertoire ranges from hip-hop, reggae, traditional and contemporary gospel. The director and founder of this anointed Choir is Shawn Cotterell. Shawn Cotterell’s first musical experience began at the age of seven singing in a church Choir. The live repertoire on offer includes traditional and original songs from all regions in Africa in local languages and in English, but also incorporates interpretations of African–American classics. LONDON AFRICAN GOSPEL Choir’s live shows range from 6 piece a cappella to a full blown 20 member band and Choir.
