It was first created by a few friends in 1991, then enlarged over the years. It has been conducted by Stephan Nicolay since 2004. The Choir aims to share quality Music and new experiences with the audience. That is why La Sestina often performs with crossover arts on a main theme e.g. French Renaissance chansons in 16th century clothes with an actress, a cappella sacred contemporary Music with dancers and video projection, Baroque French Music with chamber orchestra and a lecturer, medieval Spanish Music with mediterranean ensemble of lutes and percussions, etc. Also, the Choir aims at supporting humanitarian and social actions by offering one or several concerts each year. Many international NGO have benefited from these charity concerts such as Unicef, Unesco, Amnesty International, Red Cross, Médecins Sans Frontières and so on, but also very local Associations. Hailing from places as far afield as Truro and Coverack and ranging in age from thirty-something to eighty-something they unite once a week in Penryn to indulge and nurture their love of singing. The women of Mabe Ladies Choir take their Music making very seriously, constantly striving to achieve the highest artistic and technical standards. That said, they do spend an inordinate amount of time laughing! Whether it’s in the rehearsal room or the concert hall the emphasis is on fun & enjoyment, for Choir and audience alike.
